Our living room is one of the first rooms I started decorating. It is also the room that has been an ongoing work in progress. When we went through a major home addition recently, it became the area where we stored a lot of stuff. Decorating the room any further got put on hold for many months. Finally I am getting back to it and trying to finish up the accessories and additional wall decor.
The physical design of our living room presented a challenge for furniture arrangement. The living room is right off the foyer on one end, but also has a large entry way into the dining room on the other. On top of it all the room is a bit more narrow than I would prefer. I spent many hours using the free tool Room Styler to get the right layout. If you've never used a layout design tool, I highly recommend them. They allow you to try all sorts of arrangements of furniture and provide both 2D and 3D models. There are many free layout design tools online. I prefer Room Styler because it had the most options for what I needed.
For our furniture, I shopped at a variety of places. I chose a sofa, chairs, and lamps from Macy's. I also found chairs on Rooms To Go. I also used my old favorite Wayfair for tables, rugs, and some accessories.

The items I bought from Macy's are no longer available but I've found several similar pieces online.
