We did a major addition to our house adding on a master suite above our existing family room. During the renovation, we had to remove the roof over the family room. A major beam also had to be installed to help support the second story. As a result, we now have a coffered ceiling in the family room to “hide” the beam.
When the renovation was completed, we wanted to get new furniture as our old furniture was very shabby and starting to look very tired. We wanted to make the room cozy yet open. The previous configuration we used didn't work well for us. I used a free tool called Room Styler to determine the best layout for the room. If you ever have trouble figuring out how to arrange your furniture, I highly recommend using such a tool.
When I'm updating a room or looking for new furniture, I tend to do a lot of research online. I also create a Pinterest board for each project or room to gather ideas and things I might like to incorporate. I can gather my ideas all in one place and not forget about something I might have seen but wasn't sure I liked. It's a great resource for collecting and then sifting through your ideas.
For our family room re-do, we decided on the pieces below. I am still adding accessories and decor bit by bit so check back regularly for new additions. Click on any of the pictures for complete item details.
